Everything About A Level Rank Points

Answers to every question you have about the RP system — in plain, simple English.

Rank Points (RP) are a numerical score calculated from your A Level results. They are used by Singapore universities during the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) to rank applicants for course admission. The higher your RP, the better your chances of getting into competitive courses. The maximum possible RP is 90.
Your RP is calculated from:
  • Best 3 H2 subjects (up to 20 points each = 60 pts max)
  • GP (General Paper) as H1 (up to 10 points)
  • 1 H1 contrasting subject or best H2 counted as H1 (up to 10 points)
  • Mother Tongue Language (MTL) — best of H1 MTL or equivalent
  • H3 bonus — Distinction (+2), Merit (+1)
Project Work is not counted in RP but must be passed for your A Level certificate.
The maximum is 90 RP. This requires straight As across all 3 H2 subjects (60 pts), A for GP (10 pts), A for an H1 subject (10 pts), A for MTL (10 pts), and an H3 Distinction (+2 pts) — but the cap is 90. Very few students achieve this each year.
The Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) opens every January after A Level results are released. You submit up to 12 course choices in order of preference. Courses are allocated based on your RP and course preferences — with your first choice given priority. Results are released about 2 weeks later. You must accept within the given window.
You have more options than you might think:
  • Apply to courses that match your RP — there are good options at NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT and SUSS at many RP levels
  • Consider a related course and transfer internally later
  • Look at private universities (e.g., SIM GE) with different admission criteria
  • Re-sit A Levels next year for an improved result
  • Explore diploma top-up routes via polytechnics
Many successful people in Singapore took alternate routes. Your RP is one data point, not your destiny.
Yes — but only positively. Your MTL grade is used in your RP calculation if it helps you. It cannot bring your RP down. If your MTL grade is lower than what your H1 contrasting subject would give you, the calculation automatically uses the better option. So always enter your MTL grade in the calculator — you may be surprised.
A contrasting subject is one that is from a different subject group than your 3 H2 subjects. For example, if all your H2 subjects are Sciences, a Humanities H1 counts as your contrasting subject. This is included in your RP as an H1 (worth up to 10 points). If you don't have an H1 contrasting subject, your best H2 subject grade is halved and used instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — this calculator uses the official MOE/SEAB A Level rank point formula used by Singapore universities during JAE. The grade-to-point conversion follows the published system. Results should match official figures. Always cross-check with SEAB's JAE booklet for your application year.
Absolutely. Many students use this calculator to estimate their RP based on predicted grades, mock exam results, or teacher estimates. It's a great planning tool — enter different grade scenarios to understand what RP range you're aiming for.
IP students who sit for A Levels use the same RP calculation. This calculator works for all JC students who sit Singapore Cambridge A Level examinations, regardless of whether they went through the IP track or the standard O Level route.
Only your best 3 H2 subjects count toward your RP. If you took 4 H2 subjects, the calculator uses the best 3 automatically. Enter all 4 in any of the H2 slots and the system will pick the highest-scoring combination. Note: our calculator currently shows 3 H2 slots — enter your best 3 H2 grades for accurate results.
